RPS – Renewable Portfolio Standard

A Renewable Portfolio Standard is a a standard set by a a state saying that by a certain date a certain percentage of there states energy consumption will come from renewable energy.

State to state these mandate vary greatly and not every state has them set in place.  While some states are just now enacting them other states are well under their way to meeting there targets.  In addition many sates have a set percentage goal while others have an annual increase set to continue until legislation is changed or until they reach a point where all their energy is produced from clean renewable energy.

The first renewable portfolio standard was enacted in 1983
